How Do I Change Layers in InDesign?

Published in InDesign Layers 3 mins read

To change the layer of an object or objects in Adobe InDesign, use the Layers panel to either move or copy them to a different layer. Here's how:

Steps to Move Objects to Another Layer:

  1. Select the Object(s): Use the Selection tool (the black arrow) to select the object(s) you want to move to a different layer. You can select multiple objects.
  2. Open the Layers Panel: If the Layers panel isn't already open, go to Window > Layers.
  3. Locate the Layer Indicator: In the Layers panel, you'll see a small, colored square (the "layer indicator") to the right of the layer name containing your selected object(s). This colored square indicates the current layer of the selected objects.
  4. Drag and Drop: Click and drag the colored square from its current layer to the desired target layer. This will move the selected objects to the new layer.

Alternative Method (Cut and Paste):

  1. Select the Object(s): Use the Selection tool to select the object(s) you want to move.
  2. Cut the Object(s): Press Ctrl+X (Windows) or Cmd+X (macOS) to cut the selected objects.
  3. Select the Target Layer: In the Layers panel, click on the name of the layer where you want to move the objects. This makes the target layer active.
  4. Paste in Place: Press Ctrl+Shift+V (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+V (macOS) to paste the objects into the active layer in the exact same position they were in before.

Understanding Layer Basics:

  • Stacking Order: Layers determine the stacking order of objects in your document. Objects on higher layers appear in front of objects on lower layers.
  • Visibility and Lock Status: Each layer can be made visible or invisible (by clicking the eye icon) and locked or unlocked (by clicking the padlock icon).
  • Creating New Layers: Click the "Create New Layer" button (looks like a page icon) at the bottom of the Layers panel to add a new layer.

By utilizing these methods, you can effectively manage and organize the elements within your InDesign documents using layers.
