How to Break Page Links in InDesign

Published in InDesign Text Linking 2 mins read

One method to break the flow of text between linked text frames in InDesign is by using a specific script designed for this purpose.

While InDesign allows text to flow across multiple pages and text boxes through "text threads" or "page links," manually breaking these threads can sometimes be cumbersome, especially if dealing with many frames. A script provides a quick way to disconnect specific linked frames.

Using the "Break text thread" Script

A common approach, as indicated in the provided reference, involves using a script often found within the InDesign community or script panels. This script is specifically designed to break the link between two selected text frames.

Here's how you can use this method:

  1. Locate the Script: Access the Scripts panel in InDesign (Window > Utilities > Scripts). You may need to look in the "Community" section or find and install a script specifically named "Break text thread".
  2. Select the Text Frames: In your InDesign layout, use the Selection Tool (black arrow) to select both of the text frames that are currently linked together and whose thread you wish to break.
  3. Run the Script: With both linked text frames selected, double-click the "Break text thread" script in the Scripts panel.

Executing the script will break the link connecting the two selected text frames. The text from the first selected frame will no longer flow into the second, effectively stopping the text thread between them. Text that was previously in the second frame will overflow or become hidden, depending on how the thread was configured and the content amount.

This method is particularly useful when you need to quickly disconnect a specific link within a longer chain of threaded text frames without manually manipulating the input/output ports of the text boxes.
