To check an infant's pulse, you'll need to locate the brachial pulse. Here's how:
-
Lay the baby on their back.
-
Position one arm bent, with the hand near the ear.
-
Feel for the pulse on the inner arm between the shoulder and the elbow.
- This location is where the brachial artery runs.
-
Gently press two fingers (avoid using your thumb, as it has its own pulse) on this spot.
-
Maintain gentle pressure until you feel a beat.
-
Once you feel the pulse, count the number of beats for 15 seconds.
-
Multiply that number by four to determine the beats per minute (BPM). This is the infant's heart rate.
