How to Use a Disposable Apron?

Published in Infection Control 2 mins read

Using a disposable apron correctly is crucial for infection control and personal protection. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Putting On a Disposable Apron:

  1. Clean Hands: Ensure your hands are clean before putting on the apron. Wash them with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
  2. Open the Apron: Carefully open the disposable apron, avoiding any unnecessary shaking which could spread contaminants if present.
  3. Position the Apron: Place the apron over your head, slipping the neck loop over your head.
  4. Secure the Apron: Tie the waist straps behind your back, ensuring the apron is securely fastened and provides adequate coverage.

Removing a Disposable Apron:

  1. Clean Hands (Again): If possible, clean your gloved hands (if wearing) before removing the apron to minimize contamination. If you aren't wearing gloves, cleaning your hands after removing the apron is critical.
  2. Break or Untie: Break the neck loop (if designed to break) or carefully lift the loop over your head. Untie the waist straps.
  3. Roll Downwards: Gently roll the apron downwards from your chest. The goal is to turn the contaminated outer surface inwards, containing any potential contaminants.
  4. Avoid Touching the Outer Surface: Be extremely careful not to touch the outer surface of the apron with your hands. Only handle the inside of the apron as you roll it down.
  5. Dispose Properly: Dispose of the used apron in a designated yellow clinical waste bin or other appropriate waste container according to your workplace's or institution's protocol.
  6. Clean Your Hands: After disposing of the apron, immediately clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer. This is the most crucial step to prevent the spread of any potential contamination.

By following these steps, you can safely and effectively use a disposable apron for protection against contamination and infection.
