In chemistry, CO is called carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide is a chemical compound composed of one carbon atom and one oxygen atom connected by a triple bond. This bond consists of two covalent bonds and one dative covalent bond. It's a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and highly toxic gas. Other less common names for carbon monoxide include:
- Carbonic oxide
- Carbon oxide
Carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels, such as natural gas, propane, wood, and gasoline. Because it is odorless and colorless, it's very difficult for people to detect. Carbon monoxide can cause sudden illness and death. When inhaled, CO prevents the blood from carrying oxygen.
