How to Edit a Comment on Instagram

Published in Instagram Comment Management 2 mins read

You cannot directly edit a comment on Instagram once it has been posted.

The Limitation: Why You Can't Edit

Based on the platform's design, you can't actually edit a comment once it's been posted. This means if you spot a typo, grammatical error, or simply wish to change the content of your comment, there is no "edit" button available after it's live on a post. When you interact with your posts or others', commenting is a final action upon hitting "Post."

The Workaround: Delete and Repost

Since editing isn't an option, the standard way to correct or change an Instagram comment is to delete the original comment and then repost a new one with the desired changes. This is the only method Instagram provides to modify your text after initial submission.

Here's how you can delete your existing comment:

  1. Navigate to the Post: Find the Instagram post where you left the comment you wish to change.
  2. Locate Your Comment: Scroll through the comments to find the specific one you want to modify.
  3. Delete the Comment:
    • On iOS (iPhone/iPad): Swipe left on your comment. A trash can icon will appear. Tap it to delete.
    • On Android: Tap and hold down on your comment. Select the trash can icon (delete) that appears.
  4. Confirm Deletion (If prompted): Instagram might ask for confirmation before deleting.
  5. Repost the New Comment: Once the old comment is gone, type your corrected or revised comment into the comment box at the bottom of the post and tap "Post" again.

Note: Deleting and reposting a comment will change its timestamp to the time the new comment was posted. It will also reset any likes the original comment may have received.

By following the delete-and-repost process, you can effectively update your comment's content, although you lose the history and engagement associated with the original comment.
