What is the full form of IANA?

Published in Internet Governance 1 min read

The full form of IANA is Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.

IANA is a department of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) responsible for the global coordination of the DNS Root, IP addressing, and other Internet protocol resources. It essentially manages the core building blocks that keep the Internet running smoothly.

In simpler terms, IANA ensures that everyone on the internet can find each other. It does this by managing:

  • IP Addresses: Assigning blocks of IP addresses to regional internet registries (RIRs).
  • Domain Names: Managing the root zone of the Domain Name System (DNS), which is the foundation of the internet's naming system.
  • Protocol Parameters: Maintaining registries of numbers and codes used in internet protocols.

Without IANA's coordination, the internet would be a chaotic and unusable space.
