How does iPad Face ID work?

Published in iPad Biometrics 3 mins read

iPad Face ID uses advanced technology to securely verify your identity by mapping the unique geometry of your face. This allows you to securely and conveniently unlock iPad, authorize purchases and payments, and sign in to many third-party apps by simply glancing at your iPad.

The Technology Behind iPad Face ID

Face ID on compatible iPad models relies on the sophisticated TrueDepth camera system, located at the top of the iPad display. This system works in several steps to capture your face data:

  • Flood Illuminator: An infrared light is projected onto your face to help the camera accurately detect it, even in low-light conditions.
  • Dot Projector: Over 30,000 invisible infrared dots are projected onto your face, creating a unique, detailed depth map.
  • Infrared Camera: This camera reads the dot pattern and captures an infrared image of your face.

How Face ID Authenticates

Once the TrueDepth camera system captures your facial data, the process continues:

  1. The depth map and infrared image are sent to the Secure Enclave chip on your iPad's processor.
  2. The Secure Enclave transforms the captured data into a mathematical representation.
  3. This mathematical model is then compared to the enrollment data stored securely within the Secure Enclave.
  4. If there is a sufficient match, Face ID authenticates you, and the requested action (unlocking, authorizing, etc.) is performed.

This entire process happens in real-time, providing a fast and seamless user experience. The data stored in the Secure Enclave is encrypted and inaccessible to the operating system or apps, ensuring high security.

Key Uses and Requirements on iPad

As noted, Face ID on supported iPad models offers several practical uses:

  • Unlocking Your iPad: Quickly gain access to your device with just a glance.
  • Authorizing Purchases: Approve transactions on the App Store, iTunes Store, and Apple Books, as well as through Apple Pay.
  • Signing In to Apps: Securely log in to many third-party applications that support Face ID integration.

An important requirement for using Face ID on your iPad is that you must also set a passcode on your iPad. The passcode serves as a secure backup method for authentication.

Setting Up and Using Face ID

Setting up Face ID is a simple process guided by your iPad's settings. You'll be asked to position your face within a frame and move your head to capture various angles. Once set up, using Face ID is as easy as looking at your iPad when prompted, whether to unlock it or authorize an action.

Face ID provides a blend of enhanced security and convenient access, making everyday interactions with your iPad faster and safer.
