Switching to another iPad generally involves transferring your data and settings to the new device. Here's how to do it:
Transferring Data Using Quick Start (Wireless)
This is generally the easiest and fastest method, especially if you're upgrading.
- Ensure Requirements are Met: Make sure your current iPad is connected to Wi-Fi and has Bluetooth turned on. Both iPads should be sufficiently charged.
- Power On and Position: Turn on your new iPad and place it near your current iPad.
- Quick Start Prompt: Your current iPad should display a "Quick Start" screen offering to set up your new iPad using your Apple ID.
- Follow On-Screen Instructions: Tap "Continue" on your current iPad. An animation will appear on your new iPad. Hold your current iPad over the new iPad, centering the animation in the viewfinder. If you can't use your current iPad's camera, select "Authenticate Manually" and follow the steps that appear.
- Enter Passcode: Enter the passcode from your current iPad on your new iPad.
- Set Up Touch ID or Face ID: Follow the instructions to set up Touch ID or Face ID on your new iPad.
- Transfer Data: You'll be given the option to transfer your data from your previous iPad to the new iPad. Choose to transfer directly from the old iPad.
- Keep Devices Close: Keep both devices near each other and plugged into power until the data transfer process is complete. This can take some time depending on the amount of data being transferred.
Other Options for Data Transfer
While Quick Start is the easiest method, there are a couple of other options:
- iCloud Backup and Restore: Back up your old iPad to iCloud, then restore the new iPad from that backup during the setup process.
- Using a Computer (iTunes/Finder Backup and Restore): Connect your old iPad to a computer and create a backup using iTunes (on older macOS versions) or Finder (on newer macOS versions). Then, connect the new iPad to the same computer and restore from that backup.
After the Transfer
- Sign In: Once the transfer is complete, you may need to sign in to some of your apps.
- Verify Data: Check that all your important data has been transferred successfully (photos, contacts, etc.).
- Erase Old iPad (Optional): Once you're satisfied with the transfer, you can erase all content and settings on your old iPad before selling it, giving it away, or recycling it. To do this, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings.
