What is control Z in iPhone?

Published in iPhone Features 2 mins read

On an iPhone, there isn't a direct "control Z" function like you would find on a computer keyboard. However, you can achieve the same undo and redo actions using a different method.

How to Undo and Redo on iPhone

Instead of a keyboard shortcut, iPhones use a shake-to-undo gesture. Here’s how it works:

  • To Undo: If you make a mistake while typing, pasting, or performing another action, simply shake your iPhone gently. A prompt will appear asking if you want to undo the last action.
  • To Redo: After undoing an action, shake your device again. This time, the prompt will ask if you want to redo the action you just undid.

The available actions you can undo or redo include:

  • Typing text
  • Pasting text
  • Deleting content
  • Moving items

Why No Control Z?

The iOS operating system, which iPhones use, is designed with touch interactions in mind. A keyboard shortcut like "control Z" is less convenient on a touchscreen. The shake gesture offers an easy, intuitive way to undo or redo actions using a physical movement of the phone itself.

Alternatives to Shaking

While shaking is the primary method for undo/redo, some apps and keyboards might offer their own undo/redo buttons or gestures within the app interface. These are app-specific and not universal like the shake gesture.

Example:

  1. Typing Error: Suppose you are typing an email and accidentally delete a sentence.
  2. Shake to Undo: Simply shake your phone gently and choose undo and your sentence will return.
  3. Oops, I meant to delete: if you did mean to delete the sentence, simply shake again and choose redo to delete it.
