How do I add a familiar location to my iPhone?

Published in iPhone Location Services 3 mins read

While you can't directly add a familiar location to your iPhone in the sense of manually inputting an address, your iPhone automatically learns and lists places you frequently visit based on your location history. Here's how to ensure this feature is enabled and to understand how it works:

  1. Enable Significant Locations: Your iPhone uses a feature called "Significant Locations" to learn the places you frequent, such as your home and workplace. Make sure this is turned on.

    • Go to Settings app.
    • Tap on Privacy & Security.
    • Tap on Location Services.
    • Scroll down and tap on System Services.
    • Scroll down and tap on Significant Locations.
    • Toggle Significant Locations to the "on" position (green). You may need to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
  2. Review your Significant Locations (Optional): You can see the locations your iPhone has learned (though they are stored on your device and not visible to Apple).

    • Follow the steps above to access Significant Locations.
    • You'll see a list of locations. Tapping on a location will show you when and how often you've been there.
  3. Why you can't directly add a location: Apple designed this system to learn locations passively based on your actual travel patterns, prioritizing user privacy. Directly adding locations would defeat this purpose.

  4. What to do if your familiar locations aren't showing up:

    • Make sure Location Services are enabled generally: Location Services needs to be on for apps to access your location. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure the main "Location Services" toggle is on.
    • Visit the location frequently: The more often you visit a location, the more likely your iPhone is to recognize it as a "significant" location.
    • Give it time: It takes time for your iPhone to learn your frequent locations.
    • Reset Location & Privacy: As a last resort (and with caution), you can reset your location and privacy settings. This will erase all your saved location preferences, and your iPhone will start learning again. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. You'll need to grant location permissions to apps again after this. Be very careful when using this option.

In short, you don't add familiar locations directly. Ensure "Significant Locations" is enabled, and your iPhone will automatically learn your frequented places over time.
