How to Change Your iPhone Screen Lock Settings

Published in iPhone Screen Lock 4 mins read

To change your iPhone screen lock, you can adjust both the auto-lock time (how long your screen stays on before locking) and your primary security method like your passcode or Face ID.

Managing your iPhone's screen lock involves two main aspects: setting the duration before the screen automatically locks and managing the security method itself (passcode, Face ID).

Adjusting Your iPhone's Auto-Lock Time

The auto-lock feature determines how long your screen remains active before automatically dimming and locking. This is crucial for both battery life and security.

To change your iPhone's auto-lock duration:

  1. Open the Settings App: Tap the grey gear icon on your iPhone's home screen to open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to Display & Brightness: Scroll down and tap on Display & Brightness. This section contains options related to your screen's appearance and behavior.
  3. Select Auto-Lock: Within the Display & Brightness settings, tap on Auto-Lock.
  4. Choose Your Time Interval: A list of time intervals will appear (e.g., 30 Seconds, 1 Minute, 2 Minutes, 3 Minutes, 4 Minutes, 5 Minutes, Never). Select the desired auto-lock time interval. Choosing "Never" will keep your screen on indefinitely until you manually lock it, which is generally not recommended for security or battery health.
  5. Go Back: After selecting your preferred interval, tap Back to save your changes and return to the previous menu.
Auto-Lock Setting Description Impact
30 Seconds Locks your screen fastest for maximum security and battery saving. Best for public use, requires frequent unlocking.
1-5 Minutes Provides a balance between security and convenience. Suitable for most users, offers reasonable battery life.
Never Your screen will not automatically lock. Least secure, drains battery quickly, not generally recommended.

Setting Up or Changing Your Passcode/Face ID

Your passcode or Face ID (or Touch ID on older models) is the primary security method to unlock your iPhone. This section guides you to the settings where you can manage this lock.

To manage your iPhone's primary screen lock (passcode or Face ID):

  1. Open the Settings App: Start by tapping the Settings app icon on your iPhone's home screen.
  2. Access Security Settings:
    • If your iPhone supports Face ID (iPhone X and later models), tap Face ID & Passcode.
    • If your iPhone has a Home button and supports Touch ID (iPhone 8/SE 2nd gen and older), tap Touch ID & Passcode.
    • If your iPhone does not have Face ID or Touch ID, tap Passcode.
  3. Enter Your Current Passcode: For security, you will be prompted to enter your existing passcode before you can access these settings.
  4. Manage Your Passcode/Face ID Options: Once inside, you'll find various options to manage your security:
    • Turn Passcode On/Off: If you don't have a passcode set, you can tap Turn Passcode On to create one. If you have one, you can Turn Passcode Off (not recommended for security).
    • Change Passcode: If you already have a passcode and wish to change it, tap Change Passcode. You will first enter your old passcode, then set a new one.
    • Add/Reset Face ID/Touch ID: This section also allows you to set up Face ID or Touch ID, or reset existing ones.
    • Require Passcode: You can set when your passcode is required (e.g., immediately, after 1 minute, etc.).

It's highly recommended to use a strong, unique passcode and enable Face ID or Touch ID for enhanced security. This protects your personal data from unauthorized access.
