What should the Hb level be for IV iron?

Published in Iron Infusion Guidelines 1 min read

The hemoglobin (Hb) level should be above 7 gm% when considering IV iron sucrose treatment.

According to the provided reference, intravenous (IV) iron sucrose should only be considered for patients with hemoglobin levels above 7 gm %. If the Hb level is 7 gm % or below, a blood transfusion should be considered instead. This is because IV iron is most effective when the body has some capacity to utilize the iron for red blood cell production. Severely low Hb levels might require a more immediate solution like transfusion.

In summary:

  • Hb > 7 gm %: Consider IV iron sucrose.
  • Hb ≤ 7 gm %: Consider blood transfusion.
