How to Iron a Small Pleated Skirt?

Published in Ironing Clothes 3 mins read

To iron a small pleated skirt effectively, the key is maintaining the original pleat creases using aids like pins or clips while carefully applying heat. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Steps to Ironing a Pleated Skirt

  1. Prepare Your Skirt and Ironing Station:

    • Ensure your skirt is clean. Check the care label for ironing instructions.
    • Use an ironing board and a clean iron. Fill the iron with water if you plan to use steam.
    • Set your iron to the appropriate temperature for the fabric of your skirt. Test a hidden area first.
  2. Gather Your Tools:

    • You'll need pins, binder clips, spring-loaded clothespins, or paperclips to hold the pleats in place. Paperclips are especially useful for overlapping pleats like knife pleats.
  3. Prepare the Pleats:

    • Starting at one side seam, carefully recreate each pleat. Make sure the edges align properly to maintain the skirt's original shape.
  4. Secure the Pleats:

    • As you recreate each pleat, secure it in place using your chosen tool (pins, clips, or paperclips). Place the fasteners along the top edge of the skirt and potentially down the pleat's length, especially if it's a long skirt.
  5. Ironing Process:

    • Iron the top portion of the skirt first, pressing the waistband and any flat areas.
    • Now, focus on the pleated section. Lift and gently press the iron onto each pleat, ensuring you follow the original crease. Avoid dragging the iron, as this can distort the pleats. Use steam if appropriate for the fabric.
    • Work your way around the entire skirt, pleat by pleat.
  6. Dealing with Difficult Pleats:

    • For stubborn pleats, you can use a pressing cloth (a thin piece of fabric like muslin) between the iron and the skirt to protect the fabric and allow for more direct heat.
    • If a pleat is severely wrinkled, dampen it lightly before ironing.
  7. Finishing Touches:

    • Once you've ironed all the pleats, remove the pins/clips/paperclips.
    • Hang the skirt immediately to allow the pleats to set and prevent new wrinkles from forming.

Tips for Different Types of Pleats:

  • Knife Pleats: Overlapping pleats; paperclips work well to hold their shape.
  • Box Pleats: Have flat sections; iron the flat section first, then tackle the pleats on either side.
  • Accordion Pleats: Permanent pleats; generally need professional pressing. Attempting to iron these without experience can ruin them.
