The preparation of sterile water from a container for irrigation is a critical process that relies on strict adherence to sterile procedures. The primary goal is to ensure the water remains sterile from the packaging to the point of use with an irrigation set.

A fundamental principle guiding this process is the use of aseptic technique. This means employing practices and procedures that prevent contamination by microorganisms. When dealing with sterile water and supplies intended for irrigation, maintaining asepsis is paramount to patient safety.

Based on standard procedures for handling sterile solution containers for irrigation, the steps typically involve:

  1. Use aseptic technique. This is the overarching principle guiding all subsequent actions. It involves measures such as hand hygiene, using sterile gloves if required, and ensuring that sterile items only come into contact with other sterile items.
  2. Tear overwrap down side at slit and remove solution container. Carefully open the outer protective packaging designed to keep the solution container sterile. Locate the designated tear slit to open the package without contaminating the inner container.
