Is Crocodile Halal Shia?

Published in Islamic Dietary Law 1 min read

Generally, crocodile is considered haram (forbidden) in Shia Islam.

The primary reason is that Shia Islamic jurisprudence typically prohibits the consumption of predatory animals, and crocodiles are carnivorous predators. While there might be varying opinions on the specifics of what constitutes a "predatory animal," crocodiles almost universally fall under this categorization. The cited reference affirms the general Islamic consensus against consuming animals that hunt and derive pleasure from eating flesh, which includes crocodiles.

Therefore, according to most Shia Islamic scholars, consuming crocodile meat is not permissible (halal).
