What Happens When a Person Is Dying in Islam?

Published in Islamic End-of-Life 3 mins read

When a Muslim is dying, several important practices and beliefs come into play, all centered on preparing for the afterlife and seeking Allah's mercy. Practitioners of the Islamic faith believe there will be a day of judgement and life after death, known as Akhirah.

Guidance and Preparation

  • Patience and Faith: When facing a serious illness, Muslims are counseled to remain patient and faithful, praying to Allah for help. They believe that suffering can be a means of purification and a test of their faith.
  • Recitation of the Shahada: A very important practice is to encourage the dying person to recite the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith: "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger." This is considered the best and most crucial thing for a Muslim to do at the end of life. This declaration is also often whispered in the dying person's ear by family members.
  • Seeking Forgiveness: The dying person is encouraged to seek forgiveness from Allah for their sins, and also to ask forgiveness from those they may have wronged.

After Death

While the immediate physical events are similar to other faiths (like the body ceasing to function), the Islamic faith focuses on the spiritual transition.

  • Preparation for Burial: The deceased's body is treated with great respect. The body is washed, usually by family members of the same gender, and shrouded in white cloth.
  • Funeral Prayer: A special prayer (Janazah) is performed, in which Muslims ask for mercy and forgiveness for the deceased.
  • Burial: The deceased is buried as soon as possible, facing towards Mecca.

Beliefs About the Afterlife

The dying process in Islam is deeply tied to the belief in Akhirah (the afterlife), the day of judgement, and accountability before Allah. This is not simply an end of existence, but a transition to another phase of life where the actions and beliefs of the individual in this world will be judged.

Aspect Description
Day of Judgement Muslims believe that on a designated day, all individuals will be judged by Allah based on their deeds in life.
Paradise or Hell Based on their judgement, individuals will either be granted entry to Jannah (Paradise) or face punishment in Jahannam (Hell).
Life After Death The concept of life after death is central to Islam, with an emphasis on accountability and the consequences of one's actions.

The focus is on spiritual preparation and transition to the afterlife, making the process of dying a deeply religious and significant event in Islam. It is not merely a biological event but an important step in an individual's spiritual journey.
