Can I Cut Nails During Periods in Islam?

Published in Islamic Etiquette 1 min read

According to Islamic scholars, cutting nails during menstruation (periods) is permissible and not prohibited.

There is no basis in the Quran or Sunnah (teachings and practices of Prophet Muhammad PBUH) that forbids a woman from cutting her nails, trimming her hair, or performing any other act of personal hygiene during her menstrual cycle.

The misconception may stem from a misunderstanding of the state of janabah (major impurity requiring ghusl, a full ritual bath), which also applies to menstruation. While a woman is in this state, she is restricted from performing certain acts of worship, such as praying and reading the Quran. However, this restriction does not extend to acts of personal hygiene like cutting nails or hair.

Therefore, a woman is allowed to maintain her hygiene, including cutting her nails, while she is menstruating. This does not affect her religious status in any way.
