Does Swallowing Cough Break Fast?

Published in Islamic Fasting Rules 1 min read

Whether swallowing a cough breaks your fast depends on what you are swallowing and which Islamic school of thought you follow. The key is whether you are swallowing mucus (phlegm) that has reached your throat.

According to different Islamic scholars:

  • Shafi`i scholars: Consider voluntarily swallowing mucus after it has reached the throat to invalidate the fast.
  • Hanafi and Maliki scholars: Offer a more lenient view, stating that swallowing mucus does not break the fast, even if it has reached the tongue.

Therefore, if the "cough" refers to mucus that has reached your throat and you intentionally swallow it, then according to the Shafi`i school, your fast would be broken. The Hanafi and Maliki schools do not consider it to break the fast. The interpretation of this situation varies among different schools of thought.
