Islam, like many other belief systems and cultures, recognizes two genders: male and female.
This understanding stems directly from the Quran, which states that humanity originates from Adam and Eve, representing the male and female counterparts.
Islam acknowledges the inherent biological and physiological differences between men and women, which, in turn, influence their roles and responsibilities. The Quran (Surah An-Nisa 4:1) highlights this creation: "O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him He created his wife [Eve], and from them both He created many men and women..."
In essence, while Islamic teachings acknowledge differences in roles and responsibilities between men and women, the fundamental concept of gender remains binary: male and female.
