  • Abu Bakr (632-634 CE): As the first Caliph, Abu Bakr succeeded Prophet Muhammad. Upon his death, he was buried next to the Prophet.

  • Umar (634-644 CE): Umar, the second Caliph, also wished to be buried next to the Prophet. Aisha, one of the Prophet's wives, had a space reserved for herself next to Abu Bakr. She graciously allowed Umar to be buried there instead.
