Sumayyah bint Khabbat (also known as Sumeyah) is widely recognized as the first female shaheed (martyr) in Islam.
Sumayyah, a slave of Abu Jahl, embraced Islam despite facing severe persecution in Mecca. Along with her husband, Yasir ibn Amir, and her son, Ammar ibn Yasir, she endured relentless torture for refusing to renounce her faith. Abu Jahl, a prominent opponent of Islam, played a key role in her persecution.
When Sumayyah refused to denounce Islam, Abu Jahl killed her. Her steadfastness and sacrifice established her as a symbol of courage and devotion to Islam, and cemented her place as the first female martyr in Islamic history. Her full name is also referred to as Sumayya bint Khayyat.
Her martyrdom serves as an inspiration for Muslims worldwide, demonstrating unwavering faith in the face of adversity. Yasir ibn Amir, her husband, was also martyred for his belief in Islam.
