Can I do Umrah if I'm spotting?

Published in Islamic Jurisprudence 2 mins read

Yes, you can generally perform Umrah if you are experiencing spotting, provided the spotting is not considered menstrual blood or postpartum bleeding (nifas). These spots are typically categorized as al-kadrah (brownish discharge), and they do not invalidate your Umrah. However, certain conditions apply.

Understanding the Ruling on Spotting

Spotting, when not related to menstruation or postpartum bleeding, is treated differently. The prevalent scholarly opinion is that it necessitates performing wudu (ablution) before prayer.

Key Considerations:

  • Nature of the Discharge: Determine if the spotting is actual menstrual blood. If it possesses the characteristics of menstrual blood (color, odor, consistency), then it is considered menstruation and the rules of menstruation apply (prohibition of prayer, tawaf, etc.).
  • Al-Kadrah (Brownish Discharge): If the spotting is light and brownish, it's generally considered al-kadrah.
  • Wudu Requirement: According to most scholars, you need to perform wudu for each prayer if you are experiencing al-kadrah. This means you must make wudu after the time for each prayer begins, and your wudu will only be valid for that particular prayer time.

Practical Application During Umrah:

  1. Perform Wudu Before Each Prayer: If you are experiencing al-kadrah, ensure you perform wudu before each of the five daily prayers. You can perform wudu after the prayer time begins.
  2. Tawaf (Circumambulation of the Kaaba): As long as the spotting is not considered menstrual blood, you can perform tawaf after performing wudu.
  3. Sa'i (Walking between Safa and Marwa): Similar to tawaf, you can perform sa'i after performing wudu.
  4. Cleanliness: Maintain cleanliness by using appropriate methods to manage the spotting.

Important Note:

If you are unsure about the nature of the spotting, it is always best to consult with a knowledgeable Islamic scholar for clarification.
