What Did the Prophet Put on His Face?

Published in Islamic Practices 1 min read

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used antimony kohl on his eyes. Anas reported, “The Prophet used to have antimony kohl, which he applied three times in his right eye and twice in his left eye.” (Related by Abu Al-Shaykh.) This hadith doesn't indicate consistent application of this specific number of times.

This question, however, is ambiguous. Different prophets and religious figures mentioned in various religious texts performed different actions regarding their faces. For clarity, the question should specify which prophet is being referenced. Different accounts exist regarding practices of various prophets, like Elijah covering his face with his cloak in the presence of God, or Jesus prostrating himself in prayer. These actions aren't directly comparable to the application of kohl.

Other examples of actions towards the face of religious figures:

  • Jesus: Fell on his face in prayer (Matthew 26:39).
  • Elijah: Covered his face with his cloak when God spoke (1 Kings 19:13).
  • Moses: Only saw God's back, not his face.

Therefore, the answer is contingent upon the specific prophet being referenced.
