What to do when someone is dying in Islam?

Published in Islamic Practices 2 mins read

When someone is dying in Islam, the primary actions involve prompting them to say the Shahada, praying for them, ensuring their comfort, and preparing for the aftermath according to Islamic traditions.

Actions to Take When Someone is Dying:

  • Prompting the Shahada:

    • Encourage the dying person to recite the Shahada, which is the declaration of faith: "Lā ʾilāha ʾillā-llāh, Muḥammadun rasūlu-llāh" (There is no god but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God). This is considered highly important in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Prompt your dying people to say, 'Lailaha illal-lah'."
    • Do this gently and with respect. If they are unable to speak, do not pressure them. Simply reciting it near them is sufficient.
  • Praying for the Dying Person:

    • Family members and visitors should pray for the dying person's forgiveness, mercy, and entry into Paradise.
    • A common supplication is: "O Allah (God)! Forgive him/her, have mercy on him/her, and cause him/her to enter Your Paradise."
  • Providing Comfort and Dignity:

    • Make the dying person as comfortable as possible.
    • Position them on their right side facing the Qibla (direction of the Kaaba in Mecca) if possible. This is a recommended practice, but not obligatory if it causes discomfort.
    • Keep the atmosphere peaceful and calm.
    • Avoid unnecessary noise or commotion.
  • Gentle Reminders:

    • Recite verses from the Quran softly, particularly those related to hope, mercy, and the afterlife.
    • Avoid lengthy conversations or discussions that might tire the person.
  • After Death:

    • Close the eyes of the deceased gently.
    • Cover the body with a clean cloth.
    • Inform the relevant authorities and family members.
    • Make arrangements for the Ghusl (ritual washing), Janazah (funeral prayer), and burial according to Islamic tradition.

By following these guidelines, Muslims aim to provide comfort, dignity, and spiritual support to the dying and their families, while adhering to Islamic teachings.
