When someone is dying, it is recommended to recite softly the following portions of the Quran and supplications:
- The kalimah of tawḥīd (declaration of the oneness of God)
- The shahādatayn (the two testimonies of faith)
- Surah Yasin (Chapter 36)
- Surah al-Fatiha (Chapter 1)
- Ayat al-Kursi (Verse 255 of Surah al-Baqarah, Chapter 2)
- Surah al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112)
- Surah al-Falaq (Chapter 113)
- Surah al-Nas (Chapter 114)
- Other portions from the Quran
- Various supplications (du'as) and adhkar (remembrances) from the Sunnah (Prophet Muhammad's traditions).
The primary goal is to comfort the dying person and remind them of Allah during their final moments. Reciting the kalimah and shahādatayn helps them reaffirm their faith, while other Quranic verses and supplications provide solace and seek mercy.
Recommended Actions During Death
Besides reciting Quran, there are other recommended actions:
- Comfort: Offer words of comfort and support to the dying person.
- Good Thoughts: Encourage positive thoughts and remembrance of Allah's blessings.
- Positioning: Gently position the person on their right side, facing the qibla (direction of the Kaaba in Mecca).
Importance of Recitation
Reciting the Quran near the dying is believed to bring peace, comfort, and spiritual strength during a difficult transition. It serves as a reminder of Allah's mercy and the promise of the afterlife.
