Why can't Muslims wear fake nails?

Published in Islamic Practices 1 min read

Muslims are generally not prohibited from wearing fake nails. However, there's a practical reason why many choose not to wear them, especially while praying. Fake nails prevent water from reaching the nail bed, making it impossible to perform wudu (ablution), which is a necessary ritual cleansing before prayer.

Wudu involves washing specific parts of the body, including the hands, with water. When water cannot reach the nail bed due to the presence of artificial nails, the ablution is considered incomplete, and the prayer invalid.

Therefore, while wearing fake nails is not explicitly forbidden in Islam, many Muslims avoid them because they hinder the performance of wudu and consequently, prayer.
