How do you know when to take ghusl?

Published in Islamic Purification 1 min read

You need to perform ghusl (a full ritual bath) when sperm (maniy) is ejaculated with sexual pleasure, regardless of whether you are awake or asleep, male or female.

Circumstances Requiring Ghusl

The following situations necessitate performing ghusl:

  • Ejaculation of Sperm (Maniy): As referenced, "One of the things which oblige ghusl is the emission of sperm with normal pleasure, whether while asleep or awake, or man or woman." This includes:

    • During sexual intercourse.
    • During nocturnal emissions (wet dreams).
    • As a result of masturbation.
  • Sexual Intercourse: Even without ejaculation.

Key Considerations

  • Pleasure is a Factor: The emission of sperm should be accompanied by sexual pleasure for ghusl to be obligatory.
  • Male or Female: The rules apply equally to both men and women.
  • Awake or Asleep: Whether you are awake or asleep when the emission occurs does not change the requirement for ghusl.
