What is the Seven Sleepers' Dog in Islam?

Published in Islamic Stories 2 mins read

The Seven Sleepers' dog in Islam is known as Qitmir, and he is mentioned in the Quran as accompanying the youths who sought refuge in a cave to escape religious persecution.

The Story of the Seven Sleepers (Ashab al-Kahf)

The story of the Seven Sleepers (Ashab al-Kahf) is recounted in Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave) in the Quran. These were young believers who lived in a time of oppressive rule and polytheism. Fearing for their faith, they fled their city and sought refuge in a cave. God put them to sleep for a long period, traditionally believed to be over 300 years. When they awoke, they discovered the world had changed; their faith was now accepted.

Qitmir: The Dog of the Cave

The Quran mentions that a dog was with the Sleepers in the cave. Verse 18 of Surah Al-Kahf describes:

"And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them on their right and on their left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled with terror of them." (Quran 18:18)

Islamic tradition identifies this dog as Qitmir. He is seen as a blessed animal for his association with the pious youths. Qitmir is often depicted as guarding the entrance of the cave, loyal to the Sleepers and partaking in their miraculous preservation.

Significance of Qitmir

Qitmir's presence in the story highlights several important themes:

  • Companionship: He exemplifies loyalty and companionship, even in the face of hardship.
  • Divine Grace: His inclusion suggests that divine grace and protection can extend to all creatures, not just humans.
  • Symbolism: Some interpretations view Qitmir as symbolic of those who humbly serve the righteous and are thereby elevated.

While the story of the Seven Sleepers and Qitmir is rich in symbolism and serves as a reminder of faith and perseverance, it's important to refer to the Quran and reliable Islamic sources for accurate understanding.
