- Relying on something other than Allah: Placing ultimate trust in material possessions, social status, or one's own abilities instead of Allah.
- Performing religious acts to impress others: Showing off one's piety instead of doing good deeds purely for the sake of Allah.
Repentance
While Shirk is a grave sin, Islam emphasizes the importance of repentance. If a person who committed shirk sincerely repents before death and turns back to Allah, it is possible for Allah to forgive them. True repentance involves:
- Acknowledging the sin.
- Feeling remorse.
- Ceasing the sinful act immediately.
- Resolving never to return to the sin.
- Making amends to those who were wronged, if applicable.
However, it is critical to note that associating partners with Allah and dying upon that belief without repentance is considered unforgivable.
