How Do You Take an IV Drip?

Published in IV Administration 2 mins read

You don't "take" an IV drip yourself; a trained medical professional administers it. The process involves several steps:

Steps in IV Administration

  1. Site Preparation: The healthcare provider will first clean the skin where the IV catheter will be inserted. Common sites include the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand. Disinfecting the skin is crucial to prevent infection.

  2. Tourniquet Application: An elastic band (tourniquet) is placed around the arm above the insertion site. This constricts blood flow, making the veins more prominent and easier to access.

  3. Vein Selection: The healthcare professional carefully examines the veins to choose the best insertion site, selecting a vein that is visible, relatively straight, and robust enough to accommodate the catheter.

  4. Catheter Insertion: A sterile needle is carefully inserted into the selected vein. This may cause a slight pinching sensation. Once the vein is accessed, the catheter is advanced into the vein, and the needle is removed.

  5. IV Fluid Administration: The IV tubing is then connected to the catheter, allowing the prescribed fluids to be administered. The flow rate is carefully controlled.

  6. Securing the Catheter: The catheter is secured with a dressing to prevent dislodgement.

Important Note: This process should only be performed by trained medical professionals. Attempting to administer an IV drip to yourself or another person without proper training is dangerous and can lead to serious complications.
