How Do You Resize a Plated Ring?

Published in Jewelry Repair 3 mins read

Unfortunately, you cannot reliably resize a plated ring.

Why Plated Rings Can't Be Resized

The fundamental issue lies in the nature of the plating process and the resizing process itself. Resizing a ring generally involves cutting the band, adding or removing material, and then soldering (or welding) the band back together. This process is problematic for plated jewelry for the following reasons:

  • Plating Damage: Cutting and soldering the ring will almost certainly damage or remove the plating in the immediate area of the repair. The heat involved in soldering can cause the plating to flake, bubble, or discolor.

  • Exposing the Base Metal: Resizing exposes the base metal underneath the plating. This difference in color and material is immediately apparent and aesthetically unappealing.

  • Re-plating Challenges: While re-plating is possible in theory, it's often impractical and costly for rings. The entire ring would need to be re-plated, and achieving a consistent and durable finish can be difficult. The cost of replating may exceed the original cost of the ring, making it an uneconomical choice.

Alternatives to Resizing

Since resizing isn't a viable option, here are some alternatives to consider:

  • Ring Adjusters: These are small, often clear, plastic or metal pieces that attach to the inside of the ring band to make the ring fit more snugly. They're a temporary solution, but can be useful if the ring is only slightly too large.

  • Wear it on a Different Finger: If the ring is only slightly too large, consider wearing it on a different finger where it fits better.

  • Replace the Ring: Given the limitations of resizing plated rings, the most practical solution might be to replace it with a new ring that fits properly. If you like the style of the ring, you could consider purchasing a similar ring made of a solid metal (like sterling silver, gold, or platinum) which can be resized if needed in the future.

In summary, while resizing solid metal rings is a common practice, attempting to resize a plated ring is generally not recommended due to the damage it will cause to the plating. Explore alternative solutions or consider replacing the ring.
