How do I switch tabs on Acer?

Published in Keyboard Shortcuts 3 mins read

Switching tabs on an Acer computer, whether in a web browser or another application, can be done using keyboard shortcuts or the mouse/trackpad. Here's how:

Switching Tabs in a Web Browser (e.g., Chrome, Edge, Firefox)

The most common need to switch tabs arises when using a web browser.

Using Keyboard Shortcuts:

  • Ctrl + Tab: This combination moves you to the next tab (to the right). Keep holding Ctrl and press Tab repeatedly to cycle through the tabs.
  • Ctrl + Shift + Tab: This moves you to the previous tab (to the left).
  • Ctrl + [Number]: This allows you to jump directly to a specific tab. For example, Ctrl + 1 jumps to the first tab, Ctrl + 2 jumps to the second tab, and so on. The numbers correspond to the order of the tabs from left to right. You can only jump to tabs 1-8 this way. Ctrl + 9 will navigate to the last tab, regardless of its position.

Using Mouse/Trackpad:

  • Simply click on the tab you want to switch to. The active tab is usually visually highlighted.
  • If you have many tabs open, you might need to use the horizontal scroll bar at the top of the browser to find the desired tab.

Switching Between Windows (Alt + Tab)

While not strictly switching tabs, if you want to switch between entire applications (windows) running on your Acer, you can use:

  • Alt + Tab: Press and hold the Alt key, then press Tab to see a preview of the open windows. Continue holding Alt and pressing Tab to cycle through the windows until the one you want is highlighted. Release Alt to switch to that window.
  • Windows Key + Tab: This opens Task View, which displays all open windows and virtual desktops. You can use the arrow keys or your mouse/trackpad to select the window you want to switch to and press Enter or click on it.

Switching Tabs in Other Applications

Some applications (like text editors or IDEs) may have their own tabbed interfaces. The specific keyboard shortcuts for switching tabs within those applications may vary, but they are frequently either of the Ctrl+Tab variants described above, or documented in the application's help menu.
