How Do I Change the Slide Format in Keynote?

Published in Keynote Slide Design 2 mins read

You can change the slide format (layout) in Keynote by selecting the slide(s) and then choosing a new layout from the Format sidebar. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Steps to Change Slide Layout in Keynote:

  1. Select the Slide(s): In the slide navigator (usually on the left side of the Keynote window), click on the slide you want to change. To select multiple slides, hold down the Command (⌘) key while clicking on each slide. You can also select a range of slides by clicking on the first slide, then holding down the Shift key and clicking on the last slide in the range.

  2. Open the Format Sidebar: If the Format sidebar isn't already open, click the "Format" button in the toolbar (it looks like a paintbrush).

  3. Navigate to Slide Layout Options: In the Format sidebar, click the "Slide Layout" button near the top. This will display a panel showing the available slide layouts for your theme.

  4. Choose a New Slide Layout: Click on the slide layout you want to apply to the selected slides. The selected slides will update immediately to reflect the new layout.

Example:

Imagine you initially chose a "Title Only" slide layout. You can change it to a "Title and Content" layout to add bullet points or an image.

Tips & Considerations:

  • Master Slides: Keep in mind that slide layouts are based on master slides. If you want to make more significant changes to the layout (e.g., change font sizes, move placeholders), you might need to edit the master slide itself. You can access master slides by going to View > Edit Master Slides.
  • Reverting to Master: If you've made changes to a slide and want it to match the current slide layout, you can select the slide and, in the Format sidebar under "Slide Layout," click "Reapply Master."
  • Consistency: While you can customize each slide individually, using layouts helps maintain a consistent design throughout your presentation.
  • Customization: After applying a new layout, you can still further customize elements on the individual slides.
