What causes foamy urine?

Published in Kidney Health 1 min read

Foamy urine can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Urinating with a strong stream: A forceful urine stream can create bubbles in the urine, making it appear foamy. This is usually harmless and temporary.
  • Dehydration: When you're dehydrated, your urine becomes more concentrated, leading to a higher protein content. This can cause the urine to appear foamy.
  • Protein in the urine (proteinuria): Proteinuria can be a sign of kidney disease. When your kidneys are damaged, they may leak protein into your urine, leading to a foamy appearance.
  • Other medical conditions: Some other medical conditions, such as diabetes, preeclampsia, and infections, can also cause proteinuria and foamy urine.

If you notice persistent foamy urine, it's important to consult a doctor to determine the underlying cause.
