Historical accounts offer differing views on who first made the Kiswa, the sacred covering of the Kaaba in Mecca.
The First Makers of the Kiswa: Conflicting Accounts
Tracing the origins of the Kiswa reveals two primary figures cited in historical narratives:
- Adnan ibn Ad: Some historical accounts suggest that Adnan ibn Ad, a great-great-grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), was the individual who made the first Kiswa. This perspective places the tradition's beginning very early in history.
- Tuba, King of Humayyur: In contrast, most historical sources agree that Tuba, the King of Humayyur in Yemen, was the first ruler to initiate the tradition of covering the Kaaba with cloth. His actions are widely regarded as establishing the continuous practice that evolved into the Kiswa we know today.
While there are varying opinions, the consensus among most sources attributes the start of the tradition of covering the Kaaba to King Tuba of Humayyur.
