Who has XXY chromosomes?

Published in Klinefelter Syndrome 1 min read

Individuals with Klinefelter syndrome have XXY chromosomes. Klinefelter syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs in males when they have an extra X chromosome, resulting in a total of 47 chromosomes (47,XXY) instead of the usual 46 chromosomes. This extra X chromosome can cause a variety of developmental problems, including:

  • Infertility: Most men with Klinefelter syndrome are infertile.
  • Breast development: Some men with Klinefelter syndrome develop breast tissue.
  • Reduced testosterone levels: This can lead to a number of symptoms, including reduced muscle mass, fatigue, and a decrease in facial hair.
  • Learning difficulties: Some men with Klinefelter syndrome may have difficulties with reading and other language skills.
  • Taller than average: The extra X chromosome can cause men with Klinefelter syndrome to be taller than average.

It is important to note that not all men with Klinefelter syndrome will experience all of these symptoms. Some men may have only mild symptoms, while others may have more severe symptoms. The severity of the symptoms can vary widely.
