How to Use the Balance?

Published in Laboratory Equipment 1 min read

Using a balance, such as an analytical balance, accurately involves a few key steps. Here's how to properly use one:

  1. Open the doors of the weighing chamber. This allows you to access the weighing pan without disturbing the balance.

  2. Place the sample on the center of the weighing pan. Centering the sample helps ensure accurate readings by distributing the weight evenly.

  3. Close the doors of the weighing chamber. Closing the doors eliminates air currents that can affect the balance and provides a more stable environment for measurement.

  4. Wait for the balance to stabilize before taking the reading. Balances require time to settle and provide an accurate measurement. The display will usually indicate when the reading has stabilized, often with a stable indicator light.

  5. Record the weight. Once the balance is stable, carefully record the displayed weight, including the units of measurement (e.g., grams, milligrams).

Following these steps will help you obtain accurate and reliable weight measurements using a balance.
