How Do You Level Ground with a Line Level?

Published in Landscaping 3 mins read

Leveling ground with a line level involves using stakes, string, and the line level to create a reference plane for achieving a flat and even surface. Here's how to do it:

  1. Gather Your Materials: You'll need:

    • Stakes (wooden or metal)
    • String (mason's line or similar durable string)
    • Line level
    • Hammer or mallet
    • Shovel or other earth-moving tools
    • Measuring tape (optional, but helpful)
  2. Pound in the Stakes: Drive stakes into the ground around the perimeter of the area you want to level. The number of stakes depends on the size of the area; larger areas require more stakes for accuracy. Space them evenly, generally no more than 8-10 feet apart.

  3. Attach the String: Tie the string to one stake at the desired height. This height will be your reference for the new level. This is an important step; think about the existing grade and where you want the new grade to be.

  4. Use the Line Level: Pull the string taut to the next stake. Attach the line level to the string between the two stakes. Adjust the height of the string on the second stake until the bubble in the line level is centered, indicating a level line. Tie the string securely to the second stake.

  5. Repeat Around the Perimeter: Continue this process, moving around the perimeter, ensuring the string is level between each pair of stakes. This creates a level plane around the entire area.

  6. Check for Accuracy: Once you have completed the perimeter, it's good to check the level of the string across the entire area, especially on longer stretches.

  7. Fill or Remove Soil: Use a shovel or other tools to add or remove soil to match the level of the string. The string acts as a visual guide for the desired level. As you fill and level, check the depth between the string and the soil surface frequently to maintain accuracy.

  8. Compact the Soil: After you have filled and leveled, compact the soil to prevent settling. A tamper or roller can be used for this purpose.

Important Considerations:

  • Start High: If you're unsure of the desired level, it's better to start slightly higher than you think you need to. It's easier to remove soil than to add it.
  • Drainage: Consider the drainage of the area. You may want to create a slight slope away from buildings or other structures to prevent water from pooling. The line level can still be used, but you’d intentionally adjust the string to have a very slight downward angle.
  • Large Areas: For very large areas, consider using a laser level for greater accuracy and efficiency.

By following these steps, you can effectively level ground using a line level, creating a smooth and even surface for various projects.
