Laser light can cause harm, but the severity depends on several factors. It's not a simple yes or no answer.
Factors Affecting Laser Light's Harmfulness

Power Level: The most crucial factor. Higher-powered lasers pose a significantly greater risk of injury. Lasers exceeding 5 milliwatts can cause permanent eye damage in under 10 seconds.[1, 2] Even lower-powered lasers can cause harm with prolonged exposure.[3] Class 1 lasers are generally safe, while higher classes require careful handling.[4, 5]

Exposure Time: Brief exposure to even high-powered lasers may not cause immediate damage, but prolonged exposure increases the risk.[6] A reaction time of less than 0.25 seconds is necessary to avoid harm from many commonly available lasers.[7]

Direct vs. Reflected Light: Direct exposure to the laser beam is the most dangerous. However, reflected light can also cause harm.[8]

Wavelength: Different wavelengths (colors) of laser light can affect the eye differently.[9] For example, green lasers can be particularly harmful.[10]

Eye Protection: Appropriate eye protection can significantly reduce or eliminate the risk.
Types of Injuries
Laser light can cause eye injuries that may not be immediately painful.[11, 12] Vision deterioration can occur gradually and might go unnoticed for days. Skin burns are also possible with high-powered lasers.[13]
Safety Precautions
- Always use laser pointers and other laser devices responsibly and according to manufacturer instructions.
- Never point a laser at someone's eyes, directly or indirectly.
- Supervise children carefully when they are using laser products.
- Wear appropriate eye protection if working with high-powered lasers.
