While the idea of eye surgery might sound intimidating, the actual LASIK procedure is designed to be as comfortable as possible. The primary sensation experienced is typically pressure rather than pain. According to the LASIK Vision Institute, LASIK eye surgery "offers a nearly pain-free experience for most individuals".
This is due to several factors:
- Anesthetic Eye Drops: Before the procedure begins, numbing eye drops are administered. These drops work quickly to significantly reduce or eliminate sensation in the eye, preventing pain during the surgery itself.
- Advanced Laser Technology: The use of precise and sophisticated laser technology allows for accurate and quick reshaping of the cornea, minimizing tissue manipulation.
- Minimally Invasive Techniques: Compared to older surgical methods, LASIK is a minimally invasive procedure. The creation of the corneal flap and the laser treatment are performed efficiently, reducing the duration and discomfort.
