How to Use an Automatic Washing Machine?

Published in Laundry Appliances 3 mins read

Using an automatic washing machine is straightforward. Here's a step-by-step guide to get your laundry clean:

1. Prepare Your Laundry

  • Check Clothing Tags: Always read the care labels on your garments for specific washing instructions (water temperature, drying instructions, etc.). This will help prevent damage and ensure your clothes last longer.
  • Sort Your Laundry: Separate your clothes into groups based on color (whites, darks, and lights) and fabric type (delicates, jeans, towels). This prevents color bleeding and fabric damage. Empty all pockets!

2. Load the Washing Machine

  • Open the Washer: Depending on your machine, it will be a top-loading or front-loading model.
  • Load Clothes Loosely: Don't overfill the machine. Clothes need room to move freely for effective cleaning. Generally, fill the drum about 80% full.

3. Add Detergent and Other Products

  • Add Detergent: Use the recommended amount of detergent according to the detergent packaging and the size of your load. Pour it into the designated dispenser. Using too much can leave residue; too little won't clean effectively.
  • Add Fabric Softener (Optional): If using fabric softener, pour it into the designated dispenser.
  • Add Bleach (Optional): If using bleach, carefully pour it into the designated dispenser. Avoid pouring bleach directly onto clothes.

4. Select Washing Settings

  • Choose Water Temperature:
    • Cold: Best for delicate fabrics, bright colors, and to prevent shrinking and fading. Saves energy.
    • Warm: Good for moderately soiled clothes.
    • Hot: Best for heavily soiled items, whites, and items that need disinfecting.
  • Select Wash Cycle:
    • Normal/Regular: For everyday laundry.
    • Delicates/Gentle: For lingerie, sweaters, and other delicate items.
    • Permanent Press: For wrinkle-resistant fabrics.
    • Heavy Duty: For heavily soiled items like towels and jeans.
    • Quick Wash: For lightly soiled items that need a quick refresh.
  • Adjust Spin Speed: Higher spin speeds remove more water, reducing drying time. Lower speeds are gentler on delicate fabrics.

5. Start the Washing Machine

  • Close the Washer Door: Ensure the door is securely closed.
  • Press Start: Press the start button to begin the wash cycle.

6. Unload and Dry Your Clothes

  • Once the cycle is complete, remove your clothes promptly to prevent wrinkles and mildew.
  • Transfer to the dryer or hang to dry, following the care label instructions.
