How to Top Load a Washing Machine?

Published in Laundry Basics 3 mins read

To effectively use a top-loading washing machine, follow these steps in order for the best results.

Step-by-Step Guide to Loading a Top-Loading Washing Machine:

  1. Check Installation: Before starting, ensure your washing machine is properly installed. All feet should be in firm contact with the floor and locked to prevent excessive vibration and movement during operation.

  2. Sort Your Laundry: Separate your laundry into different piles based on color (whites, lights, and darks) and fabric type (delicates, heavy-duty items, etc.). This prevents color bleeding and damage to more delicate items.

  3. Add Detergent: Consult your washing machine's manual and the detergent packaging to determine the correct amount of detergent to use based on the load size and soil level. Add the detergent to the dispenser or directly into the drum, depending on your machine's model. Always use HE (High Efficiency) detergent in HE machines.

  4. Load the Washer:

    • Distribute the Load Evenly: Place items loosely and evenly around the agitator (if your machine has one) to maintain balance. Avoid wrapping clothes around the agitator.
    • Don't Overload: Do not pack the machine too tightly. Clothes need room to move freely for proper cleaning. A good rule of thumb is to leave about six inches of space at the top of the drum.
    • Mix Small and Large Items: Combining smaller items with larger ones (like towels or jeans) can help ensure a more balanced wash.
  5. Add Optional Items (Fabric Softener, Stain Removers): If you're using fabric softener or stain removers, add them to their designated dispensers. Some machines release these automatically at the appropriate time during the cycle. If there is no dispenser, dilute fabric softener with water and add it during the final rinse cycle.

  6. Select the Wash Cycle: Choose the appropriate wash cycle based on the type of clothing you are washing (e.g., delicate, normal, heavy-duty). Also, select the water temperature (cold, warm, hot) that is appropriate for the fabric. Refer to the care labels on your garments for guidance.

Important Considerations:

  • Deep Fill Option: If your machine has a deep fill option, you can use it for heavily soiled loads or larger loads. However, be aware that this uses more water.
  • Pre-Treat Stains: Treat any stains before loading the washing machine for best results.
  • Remove Items Promptly: Once the cycle is complete, remove your clothes promptly to prevent wrinkles and mildew growth.

By following these steps, you can effectively use your top-loading washing machine and ensure your clothes are properly cleaned.
