How Do You Hand Wash a Down Coat?

Published in Laundry Tips 3 mins read

To hand wash a down coat, you'll need to gently clean it in lukewarm water with a down-specific detergent or mild laundry soap. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Prepare the Wash Basin: Fill a clean bathtub or large sink with lukewarm water.
  2. Add Detergent: As the water is filling, add a capful of down-specific detergent (preferred) or a very mild laundry detergent. Avoid using regular detergents, as they can strip the down of its natural oils.
  3. Submerge the Coat: Fully submerge the down coat in the water.
  4. Soak: Let the coat soak for about 15-20 minutes. This allows the detergent to penetrate the down clusters and loosen dirt.
  5. Gently Wash: Gently agitate the water and lightly scrub the jacket with your hands, paying attention to areas that are visibly soiled, such as the collar, cuffs, and any stains. Avoid harsh scrubbing or twisting, as this can damage the down.
  6. Rinse Thoroughly: Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, lukewarm water. Gently squeeze the coat to remove as much soap as possible. Repeat this rinsing process several times until all traces of soap are gone. Residual soap can damage the down and leave residue.
  7. Carefully Remove and Press Out Water: Carefully lift the coat out of the water. The coat will be very heavy. Support the coat's weight to prevent stress on the seams. Gently press out excess water. Do not wring the coat out!
  8. Drying: Lay the coat flat on a clean, dry surface, preferably on a towel rack or a drying rack placed over a bathtub. Turn the coat periodically to ensure even drying. It can take several days for a down coat to dry completely. You can also tumble dry on low with dryer balls to help redistribute the down and speed up the process. Check frequently to prevent overheating.

Important Considerations:

  • Read the Care Label: Always check the manufacturer's care label for specific instructions before washing.
  • Use Down-Specific Detergent: Down-specific detergents are designed to protect the natural oils in down feathers, which maintain their loft and insulation properties. Regular detergents can strip these oils, reducing the effectiveness of the down.
  • Drying is Crucial: Ensure the coat is completely dry to prevent mold or mildew growth. Using dryer balls can help prevent the down from clumping.
  • Professional Cleaning: For valuable or heavily soiled down coats, consider professional cleaning services.
