How do you use detergent conditioner?

Published in Laundry Tips 2 mins read

Detergent conditioner, also known as fabric conditioner or softener, is used during the washing process to soften clothes, reduce static cling, and add fragrance. Here's how to use it correctly:

When to Add Detergent Conditioner

  • Don't add it at the same time as detergent. Most washing machines have a separate dispenser for fabric softener. Adding it at the same time as detergent can neutralize the effectiveness of both products.

How to Add Detergent Conditioner

  1. Check your washing machine's dispenser: Most machines have a designated compartment for fabric softener, often marked with a flower symbol or "fabric softener."

  2. Pour in the fabric softener: Fill the dispenser with the recommended amount of fabric softener as indicated on the product label. Do not overfill. Overfilling can lead to residue buildup and may not improve the softening effect.

  3. The machine will dispense it automatically: The washing machine will automatically add the fabric softener during the final rinse cycle.

Hand Washing Method

If you're hand washing:

  1. Wash and rinse your clothes as usual.
  2. Fill a basin with fresh water.
  3. Add the recommended amount of fabric softener.
  4. Add Clothes: Immerse clothes in the solution.
  5. Soak: Allow the clothes to soak in the solution for the time recommended on the fabric conditioner bottle, typically around 15 minutes.
  6. Squeeze gently: Remove the clothes from the water, and gently squeeze out any excess water. Do not rinse. Rinsing will remove the fabric softener.
  7. Dry: Hang the clothes to dry as usual.

Important Considerations:

  • Follow the product label: Always read and follow the instructions on the fabric softener bottle for the correct dosage.
  • Avoid using on certain fabrics: Do not use fabric softener on moisture-wicking fabrics, microfiber, sportswear, towels, or flame-resistant clothing, as it can reduce their effectiveness.
  • Clean the dispenser regularly: To prevent buildup, clean the fabric softener dispenser regularly with warm water and a brush.
  • Dilute Concentrates: If using concentrated fabric conditioner, be sure to dilute it with water before adding to the dispenser, as some concentrated formulas can stain clothing if added directly.
