How to Remove Lint from Clothes

Published in Laundry Tips 3 mins read

There are several effective methods for removing lint from clothes, both during washing/drying and after your garments are already lint-covered.

During Washing & Drying: Preventative Measures

These methods focus on minimizing lint accumulation in the first place.

  • Wash Clothes Inside Out: Turning your clothes inside out helps to prevent friction that causes lint to form. This is especially important for darker fabrics.

  • Use a Cold, Gentle Cycle: A gentler cycle reduces the agitation that leads to lint production. Cold water is also less likely to damage fabrics.

  • Avoid Overloading the Washing Machine: Overloading prevents proper washing and rinsing, which can trap lint.

  • Clean Your Washing Machine Regularly: A dirty washing machine can be a source of lint. Run an empty cycle with white vinegar or a washing machine cleaner periodically.

  • Use Dryer Sheets or Fabric Softener Sparingly: While they can reduce static cling (which attracts lint), overuse can leave residue and actually contribute to lint buildup. Consider using wool dryer balls as an alternative.

  • Dry on Low Heat or "Air Only": High heat can break down fibers and generate more lint. Air drying is an excellent option when possible.

Removing Lint After It's Already There

These methods are for removing existing lint.

  • Lint Roller: This is a simple and effective solution for removing surface lint. Roll it over the garment until the sticky surface is covered. Replace the sheet when it loses its stickiness.

  • Masking Tape or Packing Tape: Similar to a lint roller, wrap tape around your hand, sticky side out, and pat the garment to lift off lint.

  • Fabric Shaver: This device gently shaves off pills and lint from the surface of the fabric. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as you could damage the material.

  • Clothes Brush: A clothes brush with stiff bristles can help to dislodge lint, especially from heavier fabrics.

  • Microfiber Cloth: Dampen a microfiber cloth and wipe down the garment. The fibers in the cloth will attract and trap the lint.

  • Vinegar Rinse: If you're still struggling with lint, try rinsing the garment in a solution of water and white vinegar. Vinegar helps to loosen lint fibers.

Choosing the Right Method

The best method for removing lint will depend on the type of fabric and the amount of lint present. For delicate fabrics, a gentle approach like a lint roller or microfiber cloth is best. For more stubborn lint, a fabric shaver or clothes brush may be necessary. Prevention is always key to reduce the need for removal.
