Washing your shirt at home is easy! Follow these steps for clean, fresh clothes.
Preparing Your Shirt
Before washing, check the care label for specific instructions. This label will indicate whether your shirt is suitable for machine washing, hand washing, or dry cleaning.
- Pre-treat stains: Gently rub a small amount of detergent directly onto any stains before washing. For stubborn stains, consider using a stain remover before washing. Avoid using chlorine-based bleach, as this can discolor fabrics. (Use a high-quality detergent, that is appropriate to the color of the shirt). Alternatives to bleach include products like Dryel for a home dry cleaning effect (Feb 12, 2023 ... There's a product in the detergent aisle called "Dryel" - it's a bag that you put your clothes in and a little pad with some kind of cleaner.) or a combination of vinegar and baking soda (Vinegar and Baking Soda Are a Better Stain Remover than Bleach).
Washing Your Shirt
Machine Washing:
- Select the appropriate cycle: Choose a gentle cycle for delicate fabrics like silk or wool. For cotton shirts, a normal cycle is usually fine. (Most dress shirts can be washed. If the label indicates it is safe to machine or hand wash your shirt, like with most cotton shirts, you'll still want to take)
- Water temperature: Use cold water for most fabrics to prevent shrinkage and color fading. Hot water is generally only necessary for heavily soiled items.
- Detergent: Use a high-quality detergent suitable for the shirt's color and fabric. Avoid chlorine bleach. (Use a high-quality detergent, that is appropriate to the color of the shirt)
Hand Washing:
- Fill a basin: Fill a basin with cool water and a small amount of gentle detergent.
- Submerge the shirt: Submerge the shirt and gently agitate it in the water.
- Rinse: Rinse the shirt thoroughly with cool water until all the detergent is removed.
Drying Your Shirt
Air Drying:
- Hang to dry: Hang your shirt on a hanger or clothesline to air dry. This is the best method for most shirts, especially delicate fabrics, to prevent shrinkage and damage. (You're going to skip machine drying the shirts entirely. In part because you'll get a better result by allowing the shirt to air dry or by pressing it straight)
- Avoid direct sunlight: Direct sunlight can fade the color of your shirt.
Machine Drying (if allowed):
- Low heat: If your shirt's care label allows machine drying, use a low heat setting to minimize shrinkage and damage. (My washer is about 3 years old. I hang dry clothes on a rack. Everything turns out fine. The only major shrinking I've experienced was with)
