How Do I Add Layers to a Group?

Published in Layer Management 2 mins read

Adding layers to a group is a straightforward process within your layers palette. The quickest way is simply to drag the desired layers onto the group folder.

Here's a breakdown of the steps, including how to create the group first:

Creating a New Group

Before you can add layers, you need a group to put them in.

  1. Locate the "Create a new group" button. This is typically represented by a folder icon ( ) at the bottom of your layers palette.
  2. Click this button. A new group folder layer will appear in your layers palette.
  3. By default, it might be named something generic like "Group 1".

Adding Layers to the Group

Now that you have a group, you can start organizing your layers within it.

The primary method is dragging:

  • Drag individual layers or multiple selected layers onto the group folder layer in the layers palette.
  • As you drag, the layers will appear indented beneath the group folder, indicating they are now inside the group.

This method works whether you are dragging layers that already exist or dragging new layers (like shape layers, text layers, etc.) directly into an existing group.

Renaming Your Group

Keeping your workspace organized is key. Rename your group to reflect its contents.

  • Double-click on the current Group Name directly in the Layers Palette.
  • Type your desired name (e.g., "Background Elements", "Character Assets", "UI Layout").
  • Press Enter (or Return) to confirm the new name.

By following these steps, you can effectively manage and organize your project by grouping related layers together, making your layers palette cleaner and easier to navigate.
