How Do You Add Layers to a Layer Group Filter?

Published in Layer Management 3 mins read

You can add layers to a Layer Group filter in the Layer Properties Manager using two primary methods: dragging layers directly from the layer list or selecting an object on the desired layer within your drawing.

Adding layers to group filters helps organize your drawing by creating custom collections of layers, making it easier to manage visibility, properties, and other layer controls for specific parts of your project.

Methods for Adding Layers to a Group Filter

Here are the two ways to manually add layers to an existing Layer Group filter, as described in the reference:

Method 1: Dragging Layers in the Layer Properties Manager

This method involves using the Layer Properties Manager dialog box to visually move layers into your desired group.

  1. Open the Layer Properties Manager.
  2. In the left pane, locate and select the Layer Group filter you want to add layers to.
  3. In the right pane, which lists all layers in the drawing, find the layer(s) you wish to add.
  4. Click and drag the selected layer(s) from the right pane to the name of the Layer Group filter in the left pane.
  5. Release the mouse button to drop the layers into the group.

This is often the most direct way when you know the layer names you want to add.

Method 2: Adding Layers by Selecting Objects

This technique is useful when you want to add the layer associated with a specific object visible in your drawing.

  1. Have your drawing open and visible.
  2. Identify an object that resides on the layer you wish to add to your group filter.
  3. Within the functionality used to manage layer groups (typically accessed via the Layer Properties Manager or related tools), there is an option to add a layer by selecting an object.
  4. Use this option and select the object in the drawing.
  5. The software will automatically identify the layer that the selected object is on and add that layer to your currently active Layer Group filter.

This method is particularly helpful when you don't know the exact name of a layer but can see an object on it.

These methods allow you to manually curate the layers included in your Layer Group filters, providing flexibility in how you organize and manage the layers in your drawing.
