Simple Steps to Dry Your Leather Wallet

Published in Leather Care 2 mins read

To dry out a damp leather wallet effectively, use a method that draws moisture away from the material in a controlled environment.

If your leather wallet has become damp, a practical approach is to use absorbent materials to gently extract the moisture. This method helps prevent damage that can occur from excessive heat or direct sunlight.

Here’s how you can dry your wallet using common absorbent materials:

  1. Prepare the Wallet: Ensure the wallet is free of any contents.
  2. Gather Supplies: You will need a ziplock bag or a container and either silica gel packs or uncooked rice.
  3. Create the Drying Environment:
    • Put your damp leather wallet in a ziplock bag or a container.
    • Fill the bag or container with silica gel packs or uncooked rice.
    • Close the container or bag securely.
  4. Allow Absorption: Leave the wallet inside the bag or container for 24-48 hours.

The silica gel or rice within the sealed environment should work to absorb the water from the wallet's interior, helping it to dry out without cracking or becoming stiff.

Why Use Silica Gel or Rice?

  • Absorption: Both silica gel and uncooked rice are effective at absorbing moisture from the air around them.
  • Controlled Drying: Placing the wallet in a sealed container with these materials allows for a gradual, controlled drying process, which is much safer for leather than rapid drying methods like using a hairdryer or placing it near a heater.
  • Protection: This method helps to protect the wallet from dust and potential deformation while it dries.

After 24-48 hours, check the wallet. If it still feels damp, you may need to replace the absorbent material and repeat the process for another 24 hours. Once dry, consider using a leather conditioner to restore moisture and flexibility to the material.
